Beyond Mary Janes: Why Ballet Flats Deserve Their Own Moment

A ballet flat isn't a Mary Jane without the strap

Ballet flats usually get filed under one of two headings: a summer basic, or the shoe you reach for when a Mary Jane feels like too much. Neither does it justice. A ballet flat is built differently from a Mary Jane, and the difference decides which one actually suits your day, not just your outfit. Get that right, and choosing ballet flats in Singapore stops being a coin flip between two shoes that just happen to look similar.

Ballet flats vs Mary Janes: not the same shoe

The two get lumped together because they're both flat and both feminine, but the construction answers a different question. A Mary Jane holds the foot in place with a strap across the instep, which is what gives it that structured, slightly dressed-up line. A ballet flat drops the strap altogether and relies on a closer-cut vamp (the top-front part of a shoe that covers the toes and the top of the foot) to stay on, which is what gives it the cleaner, more minimalist silhouette people reach for . Neither is the "simpler" version of the other; they're solving for security versus ease.

That difference also changes how each one should fit. A Mary Jane's strap can take up a little slack if the fit runs slightly generous, which gives you some margin at the sizing stage. A ballet flat has nothing to adjust after the fact, so getting the length and the width of the vamp right matters more, not less, than it would with a strapped shoe.

Loafers and slingbacks sit on the same spectrum for the same reason: a loafer adds structure through its closed, moulded shape, a slingback keeps the strap but moves it to the heel. Once you're choosing on construction rather than looks, the decision gets a lot easier. Browse the full ballerinas collection to see where that plays out across styles. The strap makes a bigger difference than it looks, and flat Mary Janes is where to feel it for yourself.

Are ballet flats actually bad for your feet?

The complaint isn't wrong, but it's aimed at the wrong target. A cheaply built flat with no arch structure and a stiff, flat insole will feel exactly as bad as its reputation after a few hours. That's a construction problem, not a verdict on ballet flats as a category, and a comfortable ballet flat is entirely possible once you know what to check for.

What actually decides comfort:

  • Arch support. Even a small amount of structure under the arch stops your foot from doing all the shock absorption itself over a full day. A completely flat, unsupported insole is what most of the "bad for your feet" reputation is really describing.

  • Sole flex. A sole that bends with your foot at the ball, rather than staying rigid, is what keeps a flat from feeling like walking on a board. Press the sole in your hand before buying: some give at the ball, not through the whole length, is what you want.

  • The upper material. Genuine leather moulds to your foot shape over the first few wears, where a stiff synthetic upper never quite gives. It's a big part of why a well-built leather ballet flat feels different by week two than it did on day one, and why rotating between two pairs rather than wearing one daily lets the leather recover its shape between wears.

Treat these as what to check for, not a guarantee any single pair makes. A flat that works for one foot shape won't automatically work for another.

Are ballet flats still worth it right now?

Ballet flats don't need a trend to earn a place in your rotation, but it's worth saying they're currently having one anyway. The renewed interest in balletcore and softer, more feminine dressing has pulled the silhouette back into view for a younger audience who might otherwise have skipped straight to sneakers or Mary Janes. That's a reason to try one if you haven't, not the reason to buy one; the shoe was worth owning before the trend and will still be worth owning after it fades.

When to reach for each

The workday. A Mary Jane's structure reads as slightly more put-together for a client meeting or a full day at a desk. A ballet flat works just as well and disappears more into a casual outfit, which makes it the better default when the day is more errands and commute than fixed meetings.

A full day on your feet. This is where the ballet flat earns its keep: nothing at the instep to dig in, nothing to adjust after hours of walking. Errands, a long shift, a day of appointments back to back: anything where you're on and off transport and pavement more than you're sitting still.

An occasion that wants a bit more. An embellished ballet flat carries the same ease as a plain everyday pair but reads dressier, without asking you to switch to a heel. For a full styling moment built around this exact pairing, The Babydoll Dress Revival goes further into how to wear ballet flats with a dress.

Fit and care notes

New leather takes a little time to shape to your foot, so expect the first few wears to feel slightly firmer than they will after a week of regular use. Try a pair indoors first and walk a few steps on a hard floor: your foot shouldn't slide forward into the toe, and the vamp shouldn't feel like it's gripping. Because there's no strap to take up the slack, size true rather than sizing down for a snugger fit; a ballet flat that's slightly loose will only get looser as the leather softens.

Care depends on the finish. Leather wants a soft cloth and a proper leather cream every few wears, worked in after the shoe has had a chance to dry if it's picked up any moisture. Suede and embellished styles need their own specific care rather than a generic routine: brush suede rather than wipe it, and keep crystal or embellished trims away from anything that could catch on the detailing when you're storing them. Our guide to suede and leather care goes through both properly.
