A Coffee Date with
That chick from MTV Asia, Hanli Hoefer,
sat down with us on a coffee date as she
shares her career, fashion, fitness and beauty tips
There is no such thing as an unfulfilling day in the life of Hanli Hoefer (@hanlihoefer). At just 26-year-old, the multi-talented media personality of Chinese-German descent has carved out quite a name for herself in the world of fashion, TV and radio.
The model-VJ-DJ has her roots in modelling where she fronted the covers of major titles including Her World, Shape and NYLON. In 2012, she took the plunge to audition as a host for MTV Asia and quickly won the hearts of producers with her big eyes, charming smile and cheerful disposition.
Since then, she has never looked back. Today, Hanli is a familiar face on the music channel and travels extensively around Southeast Asia to profile DJs, musicians, celebrities and even politicians. Despite her hectic schedule, she still finds time to emcee at various events, takes on acting roles and hosts her own radio show on power98.fm.

1. What have you been up to lately?
This year, I’ve launched my own radio talk on power98.fm. It’s called ‘Hanging Out With Hanli’ and it is on air every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. I also acted as a supporting role on a Toggle’s rom-com called ‘The Wedding Survival Handbook’.
2. Are there any big upcoming projects you are working on right now?
Yes! I’ve some big plans coming up at the end of the year. Right now, I can’t share too many details on what they’re so you’ll just have to stay tuned to my IG social updates for announcements.
3. Who are some of your fashion inspirations?
Cleopatra, my mother, pin-up fashion and Samantha from Sex and the City.
4. How would you describe your fashion sense?
My style is feminine, bold and sexy. I love warm fiery colours, leather textures, classic denim cuts and body-hugging silhouettes. I never leave the house without gold hoops or necklaces. I listen to a lot of neo-soul, RnB, alt-rock and Motown where I derive my styling inspirations.
5. What will be the fool-proof style or dress code to look good?
A pair of high waisted skinny jeans, a black or white tank top tucked in, red lips, gold hoops and a smile. Pair it with some skinny black pumps or boots and you’re good to go. Always tuck in your top and place emphasis on your waist. Curves are beautiful! Don’t hide them.
6. You are unafraid to incorporate colours or prints into your outfits, what will your advice be for others?
I use the ‘plain up top and party on the bottom’ strategy when playing with prints or bold colours. Usually, I’ll wear a funky skirt, pants or shorts and a plain black tank on top. I like to accessorise so I’ll wear layered jewellery to balance it out.
I love playing around with fashion trends but I incorporate it with my own style to have a sense of self in my looks. You won’t catch me in a full “hype bae” outfit because that isn’t me but you will catch me wearing a fresh pair of Air Force Ones mixed in with my regular looks.
7. What are the upcoming fashion trends you are most excited about?
Fashion is going backwards which I love! Let’s bring back some punk rock elements please! Big old chunky doc martens with skinny jeans!

8. Your social media feeds are filled with shoes. Do you consider yourself as a shoeaholic and what are the things you look out for before buying shoes?
I’m a shoe fanatic, and specifically, love a pair of boots. It’s a pity that Singapore is too hot to wear them all the time. More importantly, for footwear, it has to be comfortable. I’ll only wear heels to dinner where I’ll be seated. If I’m going out dancing, its sneakers always.
I’ve a tattoo of a snake on my left foot, so when I try shoes on, I’ll make sure they complement my ink. My dream shoes will be a slick pair of black boots with some gold details.
9. You seem to do yoga quite avidly, how do you keep up with your fitness regime despite your multiple roles?
It is important for me to hit the gym or go for my yoga sessions because it is a way I practise self-care. I prioritise my fitness. Without self-care, I have no balance!
10. Do you have a diet that you follow strictly?
Zero. I’m done with diets! They stress me out. I intuitively eat. I don’t’ follow diets as they don’t work for me and I don’t follow the traditional breakfast-lunch-dinner approach. I eat when I’m hungry but I always ensure my meals are nutrient-dense food.
11. Do you have any tips on how to incorporate a short daily workout for busy working adults?
Don’t look at working out as an option – just do it. Train yourself to make it a requirement that you exercise at least 3 times a week.
12. What are some of your current workout playlist?
Cardi B, Lizzo and Nicki Minaj! Anything female badass anthem really.
13. What are some of your skincare routine when you travel?
I use face masks more regularly when I travel. The stress of different environments always makes my skin congested and dehydrated so I counter those with regular sheets and night masks.
14. As you travel and transit in airports often, what are your comfort food in a café?
A warmed up buttery croissant!
15. What are some of your favourite type of coffee?
An Americano with a splash of nut milk, a good matcha latte or a mocha with a hint of orange.
16. Do you have a guilty dessert pleasure?
Sticky date pudding with extra caramel sauce OR carrot cate with thick cream cheese icing.
17. What is your current dessert obsession?
A rich dark chocolate mousse.
18. What desserts best describe your personality?
Something rich in flavour, dense in texture and decadent. Like a banana French toast with caramel sauce and a scoop of high-quality vanilla ice cream. Yes, please and yum.
