The ‘90s Look That
Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel
Would Approve Of
All of us need a role model to look up – one that we can relate with, admire or hold ourselves to a higher standard. We are talking about a heroine who embodies these traits of a strong, independent woman who is empowered to lead by example. Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel is set to take the stage on 8 March (7 March in Singapore), talking about being timely for International Women’s Day!
In the comics version, the strong, photon-firing and superfast heroine, Captain Marvel, become one of Earth’s defenders in galactic battles who lived to tell the tale when she came face to face with supervillain Thanos and his Black Order. We’ll have to wait to see what happens on the Marvel Cinematic Universe version.
But we are expecting that this will come in future sequels as this new release will introduce Captain Marvel (aka Carol Danvers) and unlikely to fix the fallout from AVENGERS: Infinity War immediately (remember the cliff-hanger ending of Nick Fury that left many Marvel fans in exasperation and the end-credits that hinted of an emerging superhero capable of saving the universe).
Here are the top tips from Brie Larson that a fashion hero would approve of.
Tip #1: Stay Low Key
Not all superheroes wear capes, and when they don’t, they probably look unsuspectingly like your regular Jane on the streets. Besides, saving the world isn’t an easy feat. Sometimes, it’s just too stuffy staying inside your superhero costume – which probably explains why Captain Marvel prefers sticking to her wardrobe staples of a ‘90s-inspired tee, leather jacket and jeans.

What to wear:Go for an oversized leather biker jacket layered over a printed tee, and pull on a trusty pair of jeans to stay uber cool. Finish the look with a pair of versatile, square-toe flats that’s comfortable enough for you to dash out in a jiffy whenever you need to save the world.
Tip #2: Running Errands

Because even superheroes need their off days – you know, to run errands and stuff. Brie Larson is definitely a purveyor of the phrase ‘comfort is key’, as reflected from her dressed down casual style.
What to wear: Go easy breezy in a comfortable, oversized Guns and Roses tee – one spotted on Brie Larson too many times. Exude laidback vibes with a pair of staple jeans, perfect for running errands in style. Complete your entire look with a pop of colour by slipping into a cushy pair of red leather ballet flats adorned with a dainty bow at the vamp for extra style points.
Tips for mummies: Don’t blow your little one’s cover just yet – disguise your girl in a matchy-matchy outfit so the both of you look just like any other ordinary families (although she’s really a superhero in the making!). Clad your tot in a ruffled sleeve tee and jeans, and simply put on a matching pair of flats for her and you’re all set.
Tip #3: On the Red Carpet
Even without Cap Marvel’s uniform, stay a shining hero and channel your inner superhero as a vibrant, powerful woman for the ‘90s red carpet glam. Go bling-bling and shimmer in style! Turn heads in an elegant sequin stunning neck dress.
What to wear: Look on fleek at all times in a Brie-inspired sequin silver halter mini dress that lets you flaunts your legs when you put on a pair of strap mules for a leg-lengthening lift. Keep things minimalist with a chic handle tote that’s perfect to stash your essentials in style.
Captain Marvel is set to be released in Singapore from Thursday, 7 March 2019 onwards.
